While every house we work on has its own look, there is one thread that runs consistently through most – the upholstered bedhead - and, while there are several wonderful upholsterers I work with regularly who all consistently produce beautiful work, there is only one one-stop-shop that I am aware of. BedNest

Owned and run by Nicky Line, a design professional with over 15 years experience, BedNest offers a custom service that produces the complement of bed heads, valances, occasional chairs, cushions and blanket boxes. Each order is custom made to exact specifications in 4 to 6 weeks.
From a design perspective, customer selection confirms that of the standard bedhead options, the all time best-seller and one of my favourites is ‘Florence’ (pictured). Interestingly, the look of ‘Florence’ is effectively re-invented according to fabric choice - contemporary and quite masculine in black velvet, elegant in neutral linen and then girly when upholstered with a pink stripe. Since being introduced recently the new designs ‘St Germain’ and ‘Clarence’ have proved popular, two very different designs each with strong individual looks. Further, as the bedhead of choice for guest rooms, the ‘Paddo’ is always a firm favourite.
The option to customise pieces is taken up on more than 70% of orders. So, while every single bedhead is made to order, BedNest also offers customers the opportunity to ensure their selected style completely fits their space. Options include the skirting-board cut-out, height variations, width variations and fabric variations (fabric outside BedNest’s standard range). It’s also worth noting that the range can be ‘tweaked’ by adding or removing piping, buttoning or studs from any standard design. The bespoke BedNest service is also increasingly popular with designs often based on magazine tear sheets, customer photos and sketches.
From a quality perspective it is important to note 2 things… firstly, what can be seen?
BedNest’s extensive range of fabric options are all sourced from Warwick Fabrics and a sample of as many colours and textures as you please will be posted to you same day. So if, like me, you need to see it to select it, then I recommend you view the fabric swatches in your room of choice to determine the most suitable for your home’s colour scheme and feel. I’ve been known to watch TV or type a story with half a dozen fabric swatches sitting next to me on the sofa to be viewed in different strengths of light as the sun goes down… but that’s probably just me.
Secondly, what can’t be seen?
Each bedhead’s frame is made from solid timber and padded with Dunlop foam. Reassuringly a comparable quality standard is applied to the manufacture of chairs, cushion, valances and blanket boxes.
In a few clicks or one phone call it is entirely possible to organise a completely tailored look for your bedroom via the selection of styles, sizes and fabrics for any number of bedrooms.
As far as I’m concerned at least one bedroom in every home should have an upholstered bed head.
